There are many items Britons wash regularly in their homes - bed sheets, duvet covers, pillows, clothes and even cushion covers.

But there's one item that's often forgotten about - curtains. Curtains may look clean but they actually absorb moisture and can harbour unpleasant odours.

They can also attract pet fur and dander, germs and even insects which is why it's important to clean them.

With this in mind, Gareth Coxall, creative and marketing director at Terrys, has shared exclusively with Express.co.uk how to wash your curtains at home.

He explained: "After removing any hooks or rings that may be attached to them, some curtains can be soaked in cold water and then washed on a delicate, cool cycle (once you've checked the label first).

"This method prevents shrinkage and fading. Keep in mind that your curtains might need to be dry cleaned, depending on the material and the lining.

"Be sure to check the label and use the recommended method."

Ready-made curtains usually come with recommendations for cleaning - some can be machine-washed, but some can't.

Made-to-measure curtains typically require dry cleaning as the lining and the main fabric may not react to washing in the same way, with a risk of shrinkage.

If you're unsure how to wash your curtains, homeowners can simply vacuum them instead using either a vacuum upholstery attachment or a lint roller.
